The name 'Upminster' is derived from the Old English 'upp' and 'mynster', which means the 'large church on high ground'. The town is recorded as 'Upmunstra' in the Domesday Book
In the past windmills were built in Upminster. In fact a popular wedding fair is held in new Windmill Hall, a venue that has kept the windmill tradition alive in the town. A smock mill, built in 1803 by Jamkes Nokes, still survives
